Year 8 Camp (Ashleigh, Makayla, Shoal and Me)

Shoal(Day 1): We spent 5 hours on the bus. In those 5 hours, we took an unnecessary walk on a dam. The teachers lied to us and said that we were going on a short bush walk when we got to camp Keswick. It ended up being 3.2km long and very tiring.

Makayla(Day 2): On day 2 we went to the Agrodome to see a sheep show and to see some farm animals. We also went to see a geyser called Lady Knox and the thermal pools.

Ashleigh(Day 3):On day 3 we were going to swim in the blue lake. It was cold but after a while I got used to it. After that we went to the hot pools and swam again. At the hot pools they had a trampoline the we could jump on to get higher while jumping in the pool.

Jasmine(Day 4):Day 4 we went to the luge were we went up the gondola. Going up the gondola was a bit boring because of the long ride up but the view was full of nature. Once we arrived up top we waited to go down the luge. The luge ride was fun.

Vivienne(Overall): To be honest our camp was alright. It was basically bootcamp. Everyday we would walk or run through the forest and it was not fun. And to top it all of, it was raining. But hanging out with friends was good. My highlight was definitely the Agrodome and the Luge ride.

Athletics 2013

Intro:

Athletics. We had athletics last week on Friday and it was awesome! All though the weather finished off with showers of rain and we didn’t get to finish off our relays, I still had fun. I enjoyed my time hanging out with my friends, trying my best in all the activities and seeing everyone with a happy and smiling face. Here is my highlight, lowlight and most interesting part of athletics.

Highlight:
My highlight of that day would be doing the sack race and tug-of-war with Jonty. Its always nice to try something different in athletics. Most people went all out, while the others like me just thought that, that activity was just to relax and play around. It was still fun to see everyone having a great time though. I also enjoyed hanging out with Mrs Tele’a who was the teacher for the year 8 girls. She gave us little treats that would help get our energy back up.

Lowlight:
My least favourite part of athletics was definitely sprints. Sprinting is not my favourite thing to do but I still gave it my all. In my first race I was pumped up and ready. I stood up and waited for my opponents to get ready as well. When all of a sudden “CLAP!!” I was not expecting the clapper to clap so early. But when it did, I realized I was still on the starting line and everyone was a head of me. I ran my hardest and catched up to some people. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough for me to qualify into the finals.

Interesting:
My most interesting part was watching the house relays. I cheered for my house colour, Matatua (Green). I looked at all of the racers and they were so focused. In the end of the race, Matatua (My House Colour) came 1st.

Should Pt England School Be A Single Gender School?

I think Pt England School should be a single gender school. Why? Well, firstly if it was an only girls school, girls would be more confident to speak without being made fun of. Secondly, there is less girlfriend and boyfriend problems going on. Lastly, the setting or environment is a good place for a girl to be in. Not in a room filled with distractions.

One: Girls are too scared to raise their hand up and speak with confidence without being teased about. But, with a room filled with the same gender they are more confident to speak up.

Second reason. There is less distractions like boyfriend, girlfriend problems. Also drugs, smoking, drinking and fights. Also girls can focus on their work without being bothered by any boys.

Last but not least, girls like to work in a room that is warm and bright. A room with people that won’t be a distraction. Being in a room filled with no distractions can change your learning which can change your test scores.

So having a single gender school is an awesome thing to have. I think its best to change Pt England School an only girls school.

Prospective Student Vivienne

Dangling precariously from the rock face, Jake felt terrified. The only thing going through Jakes mind at that moment was ‘If he was going to make it or not.’ He was tired of climbing and his muscles were aching, but he was still determined. So with all his might, he pulled himself up, and luckily for him he made it!

Jake still hadn’t made it to his destination. It was only a few steps away until he made it to the Dojo. All his effort would be wasted if he turned around now, so, he kept his eyes on the prize. He marched with confidence in himself to the Dojo when finally with relief he made it to the front door. He knocked on the door 2 times, hoping to see someone.

The Sensei was standing in front of him. Jake anxiously waited for him to do something but all he did was left his arm and pointed to the right. Jake was confused. The Sensei then closed the door.

Day fell and it was night time. Jake was meditating until finally it was morning. He was hoping that this time the Sensei will think he is worthy enough to enter the dojo but once again he pointed right and closed the door. He turned around and dropped his shoulders. Then something hit him. He felt power in himself and finally knew that it wasn’t time to give up. Why should I give up now. I’ve made it this far Jake said to himself.

He turned around with his fist clenched. He kicked open the door and saw the Sensei standing there. Jake wanted to enter and he wasn’t going to take no as an answer. For the third time the sensei pointed to the right. Jake looked right and saw a sign. ‘Enter through the side door.’ The Sensei looked furious and closed the door. Jake felt really embarrassed.

Hansel And Gretel REMIX

Living in a dilapidated house with my step dad, step brother as well as my mum was not the fairytale I was wanting in my life. My dad died because he was eaten by a wolf in the forest when I was the age of four. My mum then married a man named Bob and Bob had a son named Hansel. He was twelve years of age which meant he was two years older than me . So now I’m stuck with my step dad Bob, my mum and my annoying brother.

Five years had passed and already I wanted to leave. Hansel was always spoilt while I had to clean the house and cook the food. It was another Cinderella story. Anyway, mum and Bob never payed attention to me unless there was a mess to clean. How unfair! They accused me of being spoilt as well, even though I wasn’t. This all lead to Hansel and I being kicked out of our own house! “You can not come back until you have learnt how to be sweet little grateful children!” Yelled both my mother and step dad. It was weird how my own mother had agreed with that stupid guy.

We travelled through the woods that surrounded our house. The cool breeze tugged on my long, curly black hair. Hansel led us through the woods. I looked up and the trees were tangled upon Hansels head. He was my older brother so I had to listen to him. “ Everything is alright Gretel! Were not lost.”  His voice didn't fool me at all. I knew we were lost the minute he took the lead. We had been walking for so long, I just wanted to stop.  However, as I was about to give up, we stumbled across something awesome.

The biggest mansion on earth was in our way. I wanted to avoid it by going around it but NO.... “Come on Gretel, we can live here.” Hansel said cheerfully.
“NO! I am not going in there. What if something scary or even someone is in there.” I said. But Hansel didn’t care what I thought. So he walked inside. I had to follow him because as I said before.... He was my older brother. I was soooo angry at him. I always didn’t get to have a say. It was like living at home again only not with mum and Bob there. I walked through the door and my spine tingles. That was a warning sign. I told Hansel but he was too busy playing with all the technology that was in the house.

“Come Gretel. Remember this ga-”
“HEY!” Someone interrupted....
We looked around and saw an old man standing there. “HANSEL YOU STUPID!!!! I told you there was something scary about this house.” I yelled furiously. We argued and argued until finally the old man stopped us. “ OH RIGHT SHUT UP!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE?” I was struck by how ugly he was. His eyes glowed bright yellow and scars were scattered across his face.

“We are just passing by and we will be on our way now.” I was speaking calmly to the man. “ No you’re not. You came into my house and I consider that trespassing.” His voice was firm and sound like he intended to speak once more. “ Since you are intruders I will have you be my servants. You can stay and tend my every need.” My brother tried bargaining with the man saying that he will stay if he lets me go. “ No way! You are both staying here with me. There is a room for you and your sister to stay in when I don’t need you.” The man was planning something. It is a gut feeling. I washed his clothes and dishes as well as clean his pet hamsters cage. Its funny how such an evil man can care for such a little creature. “ You are dismissed. Go to bed now.” I dragged my feet up the stairs, tired from all the hard work I had done today, and jumped onto my new bed.

Hansel was fast asleep while I had to lay there and listen to him snore! Anyway, just as I was about to sleep an old raspy voice starts to say something. It was the old man talking to himself. I quietly get one of his gadgets that hung from the wall and recorded him. “When its time to sleep tomorrow, and they are just about to doze off, I will kill them.”
“Hansels gotta believe me now.... We can make a plan to kill him first. Why am I so SMART!!!” Gretel whispered to herself. The next morning came and Gretel showed Hansel. After Hansel just finished listening to it he finally took her advice and they planned to kill the evil old man.

TO BE CONTINUED....

Protein Presentation

For today's literacy task we were to create a presentation, poster, document, rap or song about one of these questions....

-What is metabolism and why do we need it?

-What is protein and why do we need it?

-What is iron and why do we need it?

-What is carbohydrates and why do we need it?

My group which consisted of me, Ashleigh and Shoal chose ‘What is protein and why do we need it?’ It was an easy task as we already knew some facts about it but also difficult to present it. We ended up making a  presentation. I hope you enjoy watching it!!!

20 Hour Famine

40 hour famine, which is on Friday 6th June. The year 5-8 extension class will be participating in this activity but instead we will be doing the 20 hour famine. Last year, world vision focused on Mali and Niger. This year though, they are focusing on Bougainvillea, Papua New Guinea. For the 40 hour famine they have celebrity teams that will battle it out, to get the most sponsors as well as the most people on their team. Hopefully, these celebrities will remember the main reason that they are doing this. To help the people in Bougainvillea.

We start the famine at 12:00 and ends at 10:00 am. So, to make sure no one has dinner at home we always plan a sleepover at school. That's one of my favourite things when we do the famine. Last year, was AWESOME. Not only because I was the team leader for blue but me and a few friends planned the whole sleepover. We planned fun activities. One of them was an Amazing Race. It was quite funny because people couldn't find their clues. Anyway, then to top it off we watch a movie in the library. Then its sleep time. I sooo can’t wait for this years sleepover.

If we aren't doing the famine online then we receive a booklet. We record who gave us money and who the sponsor is from. Then when we finish the famine, we go back to our sponsors and ask for the money. Sometimes they can give you the money straight away. My booklet has been filled up with friends and families sponsoring me. I am so happy I have received $165.10. Although its not much, I know that just getting money has helped the people in Bougainvillea.

The famine is going to happen and I hope I won't be starving. This is going to go for a good cause. So everyone, GO HARD OUT FOR THE HUNGRY!!!!

Healthy Sandwich

All the classrooms in the intermediate block were given a task to create a healthy sandwich. People from every class were split up into groups of 3-5 and were asked to plan and create their sandwiches. Then in the end of the term the best group from every class are going to have a cook of called ‘MHKR’ or My Healthy Kitchen Rules. Hopefully my group which consists of Shoal, Ashleigh, Tauwhare, Jasmine and myself are going to create the healthiest, delicious sandwich ever.

Our sandwich has brown bread, cocktail sausages, lettuce and Mayo. We call it The Scrumptious, Delicious Club Sandwich. Hopefully our sandwich will be picked as the winning group. Fingers Crossed!!!

What Do I Want To Be When I Grow Up?

Many teachers ask this question every year... 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' When I was little my answer was to be a princess that lived in a big castle with many rooms in it. Each year my answer became more and more realistic until one year I thought about it more carefully.

So in 2010 I realised that what I wanted to be in the future was a veterinarian. Every year, my answer never changed. I think that this is a sign for me to stick to this idea. When I get to college I know that the grades I need can be A's and B's but most of them have to be A's... The subjects I have to take are chemistry, biology and physics. I can take other subjects but those subjects are compulsory.

If this doesn't turn out well I am going to plan B... Which is, a choreographer. I was told that to be a choreographer you needed to be fit and creative. I think the subjects I need to take is English (this can help me to write some creative titles or blurbs), Maths, also join a musical group (to help develop a beat or just learn to play an instrument). Last of all, I think that I should sign up for sports as well to help me with my fitness. Hopefully in the future, I can make a class where people can enrol and I can teach them a couple of dance sets.

These are two possibilities I can do for the future... I don't know if this will go to plan but I'm going to give it a go... If you have any information about being a veterinarian or a choreographer please leave a comment down below. Thanks for reading!!!

Something this school really needs is . . .

I was on my netbook when all of a sudden the thought came into my head. Pt England School is missing something... At first, it came to me as a stupid idea but now that I mentioned it, what does our school really need?

This is my last year here, then I will be off to college. I am pretty nervous about it. I just kinda want to stay here at Pt England. I know that I am going to miss this school sooo much, that tears might appear. SOOO maybe what Pt England is missing is, a college.

Thats it!!! Out of all the things that our school is missing, I think the most important idea is a college. We are also missing a pool, a roller coaster and many more things but lets not get carried into all the missing pieces. Since I said that I am going to miss this school, the only way to solve that problem is to create a college right next to it. That way, I won’t miss my teachers, my friends but most of all the way that I have been learning for my entire life.

All though this isn't going to happen now, I sure do hope it happens in the future. Its a good idea! Well that's what I think. I know that when I leave Pt England its not going to be over... Because once a Pt Englander always a Pt Englander. So, something this school really needs is a COLLEGE!!!

The Night That Everyone Was Looking Forward For... Fiafia

BEFORE THE NIGHT:
What if I forget my lines... What if I say a joke and no one laughs... What if I fall of the stage... What if all the things I thought off actually came true... It was so nerve racking. I was standing with my friend Lorenz and all he could talk about was how big the crowd was.  Thats when it hit me, it was like an bunch of butterflies invading my stomach.

We were just talking and having fun, when all of a sudden Mr Burt came up to me and said with excitement "ITS TIME!!!"
"Good Luck" Lorenz said. I quickly went to Gabriel (another MC) and we walked up the stairs which led us into the stage. When I walked into the middle of the stage I found the light so bright I couldn't see anyone's face. It was like the sun shining on us. I looked at Mr Burt and he gave me the look. The look to start my prayer. I took a deep breath and began... "Let us pray... Ke Tau Lotu..."

AFTER THE NIGHT:
Fiafia night was the BOMB!!! I really enjoyed watching all the performances.  My favourite performance though was the Niuean group. Why, I hear you ask? Well to me, I think that by looking at all their faces you could definitely tell that they were in the zone but you could also tell that they were all having fun. One thing that caught my attention while they were performing was that the stage looked as if it was going to break. Anyway, back to the night. It was definitely a night to remember.

CONCLUSION:
As you can see you can definitely tell a huge difference in my story. The point of that being is that in the middle of it all, my confidence in being a MC as well as a performer changed a lot. I suddenly forgot about the things I could do to muck up and stated thinking about how being an MC was all about having fun.

Time For Me To Reflect On Term 1!!!

Its the last week of school and its time for me to reflect on this past term. I think that this term was good to get to know my new friends and my new teacher. I can’t wait for term 2.

This term I participated in many things such as Softball, Triathlon, Tech, a poem lesson with Joshua Iosefo and soon Fiafia. I have also been responsible for being a prefect and a class captain. One thing that has caught my attention for the whole term has been Fiafia. Even though it hasn't occurred yet, I am still excited for it.

For Fiafia, I had the great opportunity to join in the Tongan girls as well as being an MC. Our tutor Sindy has been great as well as Diana and Mrs Jarman. MC. Being an MC is hard work as well. Believe me, its harder than you think. I thought that it would only be speaking an introducing the next performance but no. Theres a lot more then speaking in front of people. You have to control your voice. Its a bit like dancing, when you control your body to do the right things. Thats like being a MC... You have to make your voice sound really interesting.

Anyway, if I had to rate myself this term I would rate myself 8/10. As I said, my highlight hopefully will be Fiafia. I can’t wait for all the activity next term. This term was fun, meeting my new teacher but most of all just having FUN!!!

The Day When 4 Rugby Balls Got Stuck Up In A Tree Part 2

Ball after ball they finally stopped. They looked up again, and saw 4 rugby balls. Everyone didn’t know what to do. The only way was to tell Mr Malloy. “How is Mr Malloy going to get 4 rugby balls down those trees? They are Massive!!!” Brooklyn said. To Be Continued.....

The next day, the six friends went to the one tree that contained four rugby balls. They all tried to find a different way to get them down... But it was just to hard so they stooped trying and decided to play somewhere else. One day though, they saw a group of boys standing under the tree. They were really suspicious so they went there to have a look. To there surprise the group of boys were trying to get it down. "One down, three to go!" Someone yelled out. Everyone was surprised, even the group of girls.

Ashleigh went and came back with more information. "Somehow, they kept kicking the ball and one just came down." The girls were confused. "So was it just us that couldn't get the balls down?" Brooklyn asked. They were sick of trying so they just gave the job to the group of boys. It was a tough job but the boys knew they had the skills to get it down.

All was left was faith. Day after day the bunch of girls see the boys trying to get it down and the number of balls falling off. They finally made it to THE DAY!!! THE DAY were there were no rugby balls were there. The six friends said thank you. They thought that it might have been a challenge but to them it was like a little game. We were happy that they succeeded as well as them having fun.

The moral of this story is to play in the right place. Even if the best place is the wrong place. They group of girls have definitely learnt their lesson and lets hope that a story like this never pops up in my blog again!!!

The Day When 4 Rugby Balls Got Stuck Up In A Tree (TRUE STORY)

Once upon a time, a bunch of girls had two rugby balls but didn't know what to do with them. They weren't really into rugby or touch but they did enjoy kicking the ball, so they decided to play kicks with the two rugby balls. The girls names were Shoal, Ashleigh, Rita, Brooklyn, Huelo-Ata and Vivienne. They went to the top field and started their little game. Half of them went to the left and the other half went to the right. As they played they started making up their only rules such as if someone catches it they had to do 1 push up. They were all having FUN!!!

“Lets see who can kick the ball the highest” Rita yelled out. Everyone was keen to show off their skills so they all wanted the ball. It was a bit difficult for most people but a piece of cake for like only two people. It was going all smoothly when.... “OH NOOOOO!!!”

“What’s wrong?” Vivienne and Shoal said with a confused face. They tried to see what the problem was when all of a sudden they saw everyone's eyes looking up. Vivienne’s eyes looked up and saw the problem. The good news was that they had one ball still on the ground but the bad news was.... Yep, you guessed it, the other ball was stuck in the tree. This was really bad. They knew that if they left it up there there teacher Mrs Lagitupu would notice a rugby ball missing. “Who kicked it up there?” Everyone asked.
“Sorry, that was me...” Huelo-Ata said quietly.  They tried to think of a solution to solve the problem.

They knew that they had one more rugby ball still on the ground so there answer to the problem was simple. Throw the other rugby ball up into the tree. Hopefully for them the other rugby ball will somehow fall off. Simple right? Well, you thought wrong. It was really difficult. They tried with all their might to get the ruby ball down but they failed. They were not strong enough so they decided to call a boy name Logan. Logan thought of a strategy to help those poor girls get their rugby ball down. He was given the ball, and everyone was expecting him to do something to get the ball down. He threw it up and it came back down. He kept trying and trying and believe me, his plan was not working. Suddenly... All they see is two rugby balls stuck up in the tree.

Fiafia Is Coming

An amazing item is going to happen on the field on 18th April 2013. It is our Fiafia!!! Also on this day it is said that it is the 60th anniversary for Pt England school. If you don’t know what a fiafia item is, let me explain it to you.

A fiafia item is when we choose what cultural group we want to join. There are many groups to choose from like Tongan, Samoan, Cook Island, Hawaii, Niue and many more. There are some additional groups as well like Hip Hop, Singing, Rap, Unicycle, Choir and jump jam. Then we practice and practice until we are perfect. Then on the 18th April we perform on stage where we are able to show our friends and family.

I am in the Tongan girls group and our tutor is Sindy. Mrs Jarman comes to every practice and helps us as well as our tutor.  Sindy taught us a Tongan dance to a song called E Hine E. The song is about a Tongan girl who is beautiful and loves to dance and sing. But everyone finds out that she is actually a witch. Our Tongan girls looked at it on the bright side which was how she loved to dance and sing. In our minds we had to think about how we love our culture and how we love to sing and dance.

I really can’t wait for fiafia. I am looking forward to seeing all the other performances on the stage. I would like to thank Ms M for organising this and for showing us little items in assembly. I know this has inspired people to really get into the culture they are in. I hope that everything turns out well for everyone!!!

Daylight Savings

What is Daylight Savings?

Daylight savings is when you set your clocks one hour backwards or forward. This is so we can provide extra daylight in the evening for summer. The point of that is so we can use our daylight in good use.

When does Daylight Saving occur?
Since 2007, Daylight Savings commenced on the last Sunday in September when 5:00am becomes 6:00am. It ends on the first Sunday in April when 6:00am becomes 5:00am.

Who was the inventor of Daylight Savings?
A man named Benjamin Franklin. These men introduced this idea around 1784. Benjamin had help but it was said he was the main inventor.

More Facts About Daylight Savings...
If you live near the equator, the hours of day and night are equally about 12 hours each. But, the closer ones that live to the North or South pole, they have longer daylight during the summer. Also, nations close to the equator do not shift their clocks at all.

The True Meaning Of Easter

What did I do in the Easter holiday? Well on Good Friday I did nothing. It was really BORING!!! I tried to make it fun by doing an Easter egg hunt but realised that there were no Easter eggs. On Easter Sunday I went to church and we learnt more about the true meaning of Easter. When I came home I was hoping that there would be some chocolate eggs waiting for me but no... Still no sign of any Easter eggs. Monday. I woke up and found out that we had to go to my cousins house and stay there while my mum goes for a driving course. My brother and I knew that we weren't going to get Easter eggs but a sudden surprise hit us when we entered the house.  We went home and saw lots of Easter eggs on the couch. We did a quick Easter egg hunt and when we finished we ate it. This is when it hit me. Easter is not all about chocolate eggs. Its much more....

People think that Easter is all about Easter eggs and the Easter bunny... But to me I think its more than eating chocolate eggs and stuff. Easter is about the death of Jesus Christ and how he resurrected back to life. Good Friday (29th March) is the day Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He was tortured really badly by people that didn't believe that he was the son of God. While he was being tortured he told God to forgive them. When he died they put him in a tomb inside a cave which was covered it with a big rock. Three days later he resurrected back to life. This is what I think the true meaning of Easter is all about.

In the olden days it is said that rabbits were a symbol of new life. Also eggs. Eggs represent new life as well. Easter eggs and Easter bunnies are commercialised by people just to make money and profit. They use television ads to help them sell there products.

The importance of Easter is that Jesus came back to life. Because of this he is known as the Son of God. Also because of this people think that it is possible to come back to life.

If I could be someone else, I would be . . .

What if you got to choose who you wanted to be for a day. You could be an actor, celebrity, sports person,  billionaire or even a homeless person. Its something everyone has in their mind. It might not happen like you want it to happen but just imagine...

If I could be someone else, I would be a celebrity. There are many celebrities like Brad Pitt, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and my favourite Taylor Lautner from Twilight.  Being a celebrity has positive and negative things to it like for example. Positive- I could inspire lots of people but the negative point is definitely NO PRIVACY!!! Paparazzi everywhere. But if some celebrities can get away from it, I think I can as well. I would sing to people in the hospital and make them feel better.

Well, that is who I would be and I wouldn't change my mind. People have different ideas but mine is to be a celebrity. Have a wonderful day everyone and thanks for reading my post!!!

Homeless Lady Ends Up Being Rich (NARRATIVE)

Walking past shops and scanning to see if Angela could find the perfect dress for the dance. She couldn't find anything so she continued to walk. No shops were in sight but only a massive destitute building. She went on the other side of the building and to her surprise she saw a homeless solitary figure. Her mind was filled with many things. Should she help, should she stop and stare or should she go back and carry on with her shopping....

Angela decided to help. As she got closer and closer her visual of the old lady was clear. She saw that she covered herself with a large waterproof jacket. Under that was a red and black tartan skirt. Arrays of bag and luggage surrounded her.  Plastic bags filled with scraps sat next to her old worn shoes. Angela stopped and stared. Suddenly the old lady bursted out with a raspy voice. “Get lost! Please. I just want to be left alone.” Angela got a fright, she wanted to run off and get help but she stayed and tried to talk to her.

Angela found out that her name was Anna. She also found out that they have many things in common such as shopping, listening to music and much more. Angela looked at the time. It was getting late so she told Anna that she had to go. Anna looked starving though and Angela felt bad. She wanted to help. She tried to think of ideas when suddenly she remembered that she had an ice cream cup left in her bag. She offered it to Anna and she took it in delight. Angela said her goodbyes and went home.

Anna was coughing and realized she needed to go to the hospital. She didn't have the money though. She looked on the top of the ice cream cup and it said ‘If your cup says winner you have won the $50,000!!!’ Anna didn't think she would win so she ate it in sadness. All of a sudden she saw the letters ‘i and n’ and thought she had a chance. As she continued eating she saw that she was the winner. She left her only belongings on the floor and went to the shops. She got her 50,000 and went to the hospital. The next day Angela came back and saw no one there. Only a note saying ‘Thank you Angela for being a friend. Please accept this money.’ With the note she saw that Anna left her $200. Angela was thankful for Anna’s gift.
